Sweater Rosette Pillow

Hi there, it's me, LOL! Where have I been you ask? Well I've been working on one thing after another and finally stopped to actually document something I completed today, and it took less than 1 hour!

Back in November I saw these lovely sweater pillows on Centsational Girl. I planned to make my own ever since. I currently have 5 toss pillows between my 2 couches, which we received as gifts from my mother-in-law. The problem with the pillows is that they're all a very light colour and never come clean in the wash... in other words, they always look d.i.r.t.y! Yuck!

Yucky Pillows

The pillow above in the foreground is the one I am giving a makeover. I have 3 of these pillows, and 2 of the one seen in the back. I already owned the sweater I planned to use, it shrunk in the wash and has been hanging uselessly in the closet ever since. I realize the sweater is also a light colour but unlike the pillows, it washes very well, so hopefully it's not a problem plus the texture helps hide any dreaded stains.

Shrunken Sweater
I turned the sweater inside out and stuck my pillow inside. It was an exact fit, but luckily my pillow could be squished down a bit and I only had to sew two sides shut. I removed the pillow and cut the sweater across the armpits.

I then sewed the bottom seam on my sewing machine. Then I turned the sweater right side out, inserted my pillow, pinned it and hand sewed it shut.

The pillow was already a huge improvement over it's former appearance but it felt like something was missing...

Recycled Sweater Pillow

I've seen fabric rosettes on many blogs and decided to make one for the pillow from one of the sleeves. I just cut a long strip of fabric from the sleeve and started rolling it. I found it easier to sew a little at a time to hold the rosette together as it was forming. Many tutorials say to use hot glue but I already had the needle and thread out so why not!? Here's some fabric rosette tutorials I referred to in case you're planning to give this a try. How to Make Rosettes {TUTORIAL} and How to Make Fabric Rosettes.

At the end of the rosette rolling I bent the end underneath and sewed it. Next, I sewed the whole rosette to the pillow. I made it very secure because in my house it's bound to come off otherwise...

Ok ok, enough talking... I won't leave you hanging any longer, here's the finished product....

My favourite part of this project was that it was FREE! I had everything on hand. Whenever I look at the pillow, I smile. I just LOVE the added texture.

And because we all love a good before and after... (well I know I do!!)...

1 down, 4 more pillows to go... but not necessarily sweater pillows.

What have you been working on? Have you repurposed clothing in your sewing projects?
